On April 6, 2025, the Rotary Club of Lake Bunyonyi led a meaningful community initiative to promote clean water, environmental awareness, and proper sanitation practices. This impactful event took place along the serene shores of Lake Bunyonyi and brought together Rotarians, local leaders, schoolchildren, and dedicated volunteers.

Why This Matters
Lake Bunyonyi is not just a scenic wonder—it’s a vital water source for thousands in the surrounding communities. However, growing waste pollution and poor sanitation practices pose a risk to both the lake and public health. Through this clean-up campaign, the Rotary Club reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the lake and educating the community on safe water practices.
Activities and Highlights
The event was packed with purposeful action, including:
- Shoreline clean-up: Volunteers collected plastic waste and debris around key lake access points.
- Installation of waste bins: To encourage proper disposal habits, we set up new bins in heavily trafficked areas.
- Water purification awareness: Community members were taught how to treat drinking water at home using basic methods and purification tablets.
- Health and hygiene talks: Volunteers facilitated conversations on handwashing, disease prevention, and lake protection.
- Youth engagement: Students participated in creative art and poster displays to promote clean water messages.

What’s Next?
This clean-up was part of our ongoing commitment under Rotary’s WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) area of focus. We are planning more outreach activities, school visits, and lake conservation campaigns in the months ahead.
