Location: Kabale District, Uganda

The Rotary Club of Lake Bunyonyi, a fast-growing humanitarian club located in Kabale, has officially launched its latest initiative—the Education and Literacy Project. This project aims to support island and rural schools around Lake Bunyonyi with learning materials, infrastructure improvements, and student mentorship. As part of Rotary International’s mission to promote education and peace through service, the club is working to bring long-term impact to communities in southwestern Uganda.

Who We Are: Rotary Club of Lake Bunyonyi

The Rotary Club of Lake Bunyonyi is a local chapter of Rotary International, committed to service above self. Though it’s under two years old, the club has shown incredible growth and influence in Kabale and surrounding communities, particularly those near Lake Bunyonyi.

Why Education and Literacy Matter in Kabale

Education remains one of the biggest challenges in the rural areas of Kabale District. Many schools near Lake Bunyonyi lack basic classroom materials, trained teachers, and adequate infrastructure. The Rotary Club recognizes that literacy and education are key to community development.

Focus Schools: Kyabahinga and Bufuka Primary

The project centers on Kyabahinga Primary School and Bufuka Primary School, located on islands in Lake Bunyonyi. These schools are difficult to access, often requiring travel by canoe. Despite the obstacles, Rotary members regularly visit the schools to provide support.

Donations of Scholastic Materials

As part of the project, the Rotary Club has donated:

  • Reading books
  • Exercise books
  • Pens, pencils, chalk
  • Desks and blackboards
  • Educational charts and posters

This is aimed at improving literacy and helping students engage more in the classroom.

Improving Learning Spaces

In addition to materials, the club is working on:

  • Renovating old classrooms
  • Fixing broken furniture
  • Building new desks
  • Enhancing blackboard quality

A comfortable learning environment encourages better student performance and teacher motivation.

Empowering Teachers and Mentors

The Rotary Club organizes basic teacher support programs, offering workshops on effective teaching, classroom management, and student engagement. This helps boost both the quality of education and teacher morale.

Environmental Education and Tree Planting

Education goes hand-in-hand with sustainability. As part of their service, the Rotary Club has introduced environmental lessons and planted indigenous trees around schools and the lake. This promotes environmental conservation and awareness.

Community Clean-Up Campaigns in Kabale Town

In April 2025, the club partnered with Uganda College of Commerce (UCC) Kabale to organize a town-wide clean-up. The initiative focused on promoting hygiene, civic pride, and unity within Kabale Municipality. It also served as a platform for student involvement and youth leadership.

Menstrual Health Support for Girls

Recognizing the importance of keeping girls in school, the club has distributed reusable sanitary pads and held health education sessions. This program helps reduce absenteeism among adolescent girls and breaks the stigma surrounding menstrual health.

Rotary Fellowship and Weekly Meetings

The Rotary Club of Lake Bunyonyi holds its meetings every Tuesday from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM at Kwanzi Bistro in Kabale Town. These meetings are open to guests, professionals, and anyone passionate about service and development.
